Subject: Toaster Oven!
Jam > Sound One > HAB - The "jam" here supposedly is a working concept called "Toaster Oven" that never got completed. The jam is great and very digital. The jam in Sound One starts out with a great riff from Barber. Overall, the jam has a few different themes, and I think they really pull this one off without sounding too all over the place. The HAB jam starts off pretty wanky for my tastes, and there's no real melody, although there is a lot of Barber. Around 10:30 they get into some really pretty stuff with Barber and Sammy displaying some great communication. They lose the interesting bit after a minute or two, but most of this jam sounds a LOT like a Spectacle intro. You just get the feeling that it could drop any minute, but it of course never does.
Spaga > Svenghali - 1st Spaga jam is pretty good as far as 1st Spaga jams go. It isn't entirely predictable DNB, which is nice for '03 Spagas. There are some cool themes here and there, and for a bit I think the band sounds really good. They get extremely dark but eventually drop the (really cool) theme and head towards the lighter, happier Svenghali territory. There is some really beautiful guitar work from Barber in the Sven peak. This segment is pretty well done overall.
Caterpillar - Wow. Sounds like there was a lot of difficulty starting the song here. So they eventually get to a jam here, and for the first 2-3 minutes of the jam Brownstein can't figure out how to get off the song riff. Finally they cut the bass and drums back and get into a little breakdown, but Brownstein is pretty clearly itching to get back to the song. Nothing here, really.
Save the Robots - 1st jam is kinda noodly from Barber, and it's tough to hear the specifics of what's going on because the bass is pretty overpowering in the mix. 2nd jam is pretty weird, in that there doesn't seem to be any use of snare drum by Sammy. He's using a lot of rims and toms, but no snare. I understand what they were going for here and it's kinda cool, but this jam just doesn't have much replay value because there's nothing happening for a long time in it.
CWB - Standard.
Kamaole > 42 > Sands - For the first 5-6 minutes of this jam it's pretty "atmospheric" house, which is another way of saying that not much is happening. I got pretty bored her for a while and this jam definitely dragged on. The jam out of 42 gets pretty repetitive for quite a while as well. They hit on a couple cool little portions but for the most part this jam is fairly boring as well. The cooler portions lie near the end of the jam.
WiS - Standard.
Nughuffer - Brownstein tells a story about being 15 years old, having a pumpkin patch party, and finding a bag that said "Magic stash, do not smoke." Seriously. If you listen to the whole thing, you'll be lucky enough to hear Brownstein do a little horrible untzboxing. The jam starts out very good. Nasty darkness from Magner and Brownstein and Barber plays patiently instead of boring for the first time in like an hour, which is great. Overall this isn't mindblowing but is fun to listen to for certain.
Wet - Standard.
2 stars. The Jam > Sound 1, and Spaga > Svenghali are great, but the filler is mediocre at very best and some of it is downright boring.
